The goal of my work with students is fit, not prestige.

Since I started this college counseling business, numerous well-meaning people have suggested that I market to parents who want help getting their kids into the most selective schools. I then have to explain to these well-meaning people a couple of key things about the work that I do.

1. I help students present a compelling picture of their authentic self in a college application, which takes a number of skills that I support them in honing. The end goal is to end up at an institution that is a good fit for them, not the most selective school on their list.

2. One of the key roles of a college counselor is to help students move beyond big-name elite schools and learn about institutions that are likely to admit them where they can find belonging and experience meaningful growth.

3. Getting in is an important part of the college process, but it is one of many important parts. With guidance from someone like me (wink), the college process can include self-exploration, growth, and empowerment. Getting in is just one part of the journey, and it is not the most important.

4. The purpose of my college counseling is to support, coach, and mentor students as they make the first major adult decision of their lives. An admission offer from an elite school is not a certification of the learning and growth that took place during the college process. It has nothing to do with that. I measure the effectiveness of my service through other means.

I hope this is helpful in understanding the work that I do. 🙂💜
