Introduction to the College Search and Application Process

This unique offering allows students to improve their understanding of the college admissions landscape. If any of your questions are not answered in the FAQ below, please contact me!

What will actually happen in this course?

I come from a classroom teaching background and will lesson plan the six course meetings, which will each be structured around a particular theme.

Each meeting will include a short reading or viewing to enrich discussion and facilitate learning. Readings or viewings will be completed at each meeting, not beforehand. (I know how much homework students have!) Readings will come from sources such as The Boston Globe and The New York Times. They will also be excerpted from longer nonfiction texts such as Who Gets In and Why by Jeffrey Selingo. Some course materials will even come from mainstream pop culture since students should be aware of its potential influence over their college decision.

Before learning new information from course materials, students will have the opportunity to share and discuss what they already know about the session’s topic.

Woven into the meetings, there will also be opportunities for students to connect with one another as individuals so they will feel comfortable staying in touch after the program is over and supporting one another as they navigate the college search.

What topics will be covered?

Meeting themes will include:

  • selectivity and prestige

  • the finances of college

  • the role of standardized testing in the admission process

  • what colleges are looking for when they read applications

  • the pros and cons of early decision

  • determining school quality

What is it like to work with you?

I recently worked with a student who said, Working with Rachel really allowed me to be confident in myself, my work, and my accomplishments. She was not only a great source of knowledge and advice, but I could tell she genuinely cared about my success.”

Why should my student participate in this program?

The opportunity to connect with and learn alongside others in the group will reduce your student’s stress and anxiety and increase their confidence heading into the college process. It will also empower them to approach the college search with a grounded mindset while also feeling excited about the possibilities!

What kind of student would benefit?

Students who like to plan ahead and prepare for the future would certainly benefit from this course. But even if students have yet to discover their inner Type A persona, they will still benefit from this opportunity if they enjoy learning, whether or not this translates to strong grades in school. This course is a good fit for those who like to find out why things are the way they are.

Who is invited to participate?

The virtual program will be available for high school sophomores and juniors. Cohorts will be capped at five students, so they will allow for each participant to be heard. Students from across the U.S. as well as those abroad who plan to apply to college in the U.S. are invited to participate.

I specialize in working with women, LGBTQIA+ youth, and the Jewish community.
